I’ve stumbled upon a couple of things this week that has inspired this post. Now I’m on a negativity fast so I’m going to do my best to try & stay positive through out this whole message & the things I want to talk about are 1. Feminism 2. Respect/Self-Respect & 3. Modesty.
The first thing I want to talk about is feminism, now before I jump into this discussion I want to give you the definition of what feminism is it is the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. Okay, now as a Christian there are a lot of different views on feminism & the church, I personally don’t have a problem with feminism in its truest sense, women being equally treated in all forms of society. The problem I do have with feminism is that it’s become this “voice” that encourages women to kill their unborn babies & that has given permission for women to walk around half-naked & think it’s okay. I for one am tired of hearing the words feminism being mixed in with people like Nicki Minaj & Jlo. They claim that their music videos are empowering for women because they’re choosing to do what they want with their bodies. Well, I’m sorry, but you can’t be empowering other women when you’re allowing yourself to be objectified. People are not going to sit their & be inspired to do anything positive when you’re dancing around & shaking your “booty/butt.” No, most people are going to be looking at you as an object, not as the beautiful, confident women you’re trying to come off as being.
This leads me to my second point ladies let’s have some self-respect, if every woman made a stand & wouldn’t allow themselves to be objectified in any way our society & role models would be a lot different. I’m not saying you have to dress like an Amish person, but if you don’t show respect for yourself no one else will. Do I think it’s all on the woman, absolutely not I think women & men need to learn to respect each other for the differences they bring & ultimately for who they are. We would not be able to exist without the other, God made us to work together it’s just the facts. Yes, I agree women should be treated equally in the work places, education etc. & across all cultures I have no problems with that at all. I do think that at a young age girls & boys need to be taught to respect one another it’s very important in all aspects of life for there to be respect, not an entitlement, not changing rules because boys can’t handle themselves, no simply teach respect of one another. “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.” Matthew 7:12
And the last thing I want to talk about is modesty, I know modesty right now has practically been thrown out the window in most cases & women feel like they have the right to wear whatever they want. Granted, it’s a free country & you can do that, but I think it’s important that we are aware of how we dress, it’s not that you can’t wear shorts, or a nice bathing suit, no it’s not that at all, but I think it’s important to be aware of those around you. I in no means would want to be a stumbling block to anyone around me or gain the wrong type of attention, because honestly it happens. “But you must be careful so that your freedom does not cause others with a weaker conscience to stumble.” 1 Corinthians 8:9
I just think as a young woman who wants to set an example & see good role models for not only my future children, but for my cousins, & other people around me it was something I needed to take a stand & talk about.
