The Innkeeper’s Gift

And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Luke 2:7

I want to put a warning out there that what I’m about to share is my own interpretation it is not fact, I did some research & really couldn’t find very much on this topic.

In Luke 2:7 we see mentioned that Jesus was born in a stable & put in a manger. Even though an innkeeper is not mentioned it’s been suggested that there would have been someone running an inn and this poor, innkeeper get’s a really bad rap. As I was researching this topic everyone painted him in a negative light, but we really don’t know all the details because nothing is really mentioned. Here’s what I got out of the story. The innkeeper was willing to give what he had, even though it wasn’t much he still offered them the best he could at the time. During the time when Joseph & Mary traveled to Bethlehem, a census was going on, which means the town would have been packed with people, making the inn’s all full. Yet, this one innkeeper gave Mary & Joseph what he had. He had no idea that the Saviour of the world was going to be born in that stable, but here’s the point God had a purpose in it. A lot of people look at the innkeeper as doing something wrong, he should have made room at his inn, we don’t know if he tried, but he did do something. So here’s what I feel, you might not have a lot to give this Christmas, but you never know how God will use it. Christmas has become very commercialized & we always try to get the people in our lives the best gift & sometimes we get discouraged when we can’t get them that really awesome thing, but you never know how the simplest gift might impact someone, how God can use it to speak to a person, it’s really the thought that counts. So as you’re doing your last minute shopping & wrapping take a minute to pray over your gifts that God will use them to bless someone this Christmas.

A gift opens the way
and ushers the giver into the presence of the great.

Proverbs 18:16

A generous person will prosper;
whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

Proverbs 11:25

The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.

Proverbs 22:9

  1. What a great Christmas message! Give what you have. Why would we want to judge the gifts God has given us to give? Also, I love how God is with the humble.

    Luke 17:10 NIV – So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'”

    2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV – And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

  2. I once heard a story about a man in Africa who had saved and saved to buy a washing machine for his family and was finally able to do it. A few months later their church found themselves in desperate need of a washing machine (I can’t remember the reason) and he, along with his wife and family quickly volunteered their new machine to the church. They rejoiced that God had blessed them with the means to be able to meet that need. They were happy to go back to washing all their clothes by hand in order to be able to provide for the church. I was SO humbled by that story! I want to have that kind of attitude about “my” things. To see them as opportunities God has given me to meet the needs I see around me. This story was a great reminder of that for me tonight!!! Thanks!
